The National Union of Women Sahrawi (UNMS) held from 20 to 24 April its sixth congress under the theme "Women Saharan perpetuating the spirit of Gdeim Izik."
The UNMS, which meets in 2011 thirty-eight years of existence, held every four years, this international meeting aimed to analyze the current context Saharawi women near their reality and the world, and designing policies and strategies of the organization to the next period.
According to its Secretary General, Fatma Mehdi, "this call is important to reflect on our situation as women of a people living in a permanent context of conflict, occupation and exile.
We support initiatives that promote our social and political rights and promote our sovereignty as a people, to encourage our emancipation as women on the political, cultural and productive members of our society, and present in our struggle. "
Saharawi women's organization have been invited to the congress to groups around the world, making it a forum for exchanging ideas, methodologies and best practices.
This year irrespective of the official program, the UNMS organized in collaboration with the Column of the Mil a march of women against the so-called Wall of Shame, the largest continuous minefield in the world, built by the Moroccan occupying forces to divide the Western Sahara .
